Jack O’ Lantern Math Activity: Fall Math Activities

IMG_20151106_143441341_HDRThis is a great activity for children who know their numbers from 1 through 120 and can color fairly well. I have seen this math coloring sheet in classrooms often for first graders. They love it and enjoy watching the Jack O’ Lantern form on the page. (A picture of the completed sheet is below.)

This coloring sheet activity helps your little one to learn about………….

  • identifying numbers 1-121
  • following directions
  • coloring in lines
  • identifying colors black, green, and orange.
  • perform carefully or the jack o’ lantern will be off centered.

How to prepare your child before the activity…………….

  • go over the colors needed and see if your little one gets the right crayons out.
  • have the child color a few numbers correctly before letting them do it on their own.
  • let them know that they can’t rush through this sheet or the picture will not look right.
  • tell them that some numbers will not be colored at all so it’s very important to be careful in matching the right color with the right number.
  • I also like for the child to cross out numbers they have colored so that they can visually see what number they are on. This helps them to not skip any numbers.

And here is a finished product………………….(there are a few mistakes, but nonetheless cute!!)

Clothe yourself with Christ: The Husband Journal Number 29

Botanical Gardens 003

Colossians 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering:

As followers of Christ, we are to clothe (put on Christ) ourselves with Christ. When I think of the word “clothe”, it is a pretty strong verb. Clothing yourself means you wear something twenty-four hours of the day. Meaning we should clothe ourselves with Christ every minute of the day.

That seems like a pretty tall order to fill. I feel at times I don’t measure up to that tall order at all. And if you ask my family, I am positive I fail in some way during the day because often I feel torn in many directions throughout the day.

But the Bible is clear that we should put on bowels of mercies, kindness, humblness of mind, meekness, and longsuffering. Wow!! That’s quite a bit to think about. I just pray that the Lord helps me every single day with this.

Yes, I believe with all things that showing kindness, mercy, meekness, and longsuffering starts at home with my family. This verse convicts me so much…………how many times did I say something throughout the day that wasn’t longsuffering to my husband and my children???? How many times have I been short-tempered with interruptions throughout the day?

I have a toddler in my home and I think of how she needs help with putting her clothes on. I help my foster daughter with everything down to her socks and shoes. The Lord knows our shortcomings and he is there to help you with this tall order.

Sometimes my husband gently reminds me that I return to “clothing myself with Christ.”

Praying today for the saints and wives with children in the home. I pray that we all seek Christ and clothe ourselves with him so that we can live quietly with bowels of mercy, kindness, humbleness, meekness, and longsuffering.

Who can be against us? The Husband Journal Entry 28

blog pictures 012Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? if God is for us, who can be against us?

About a year after I was saved, I had a huge struggle in my mind. There didn’t seem like a lot of peace. I talked with my husband’s grandmother, MawMaw, about it and she related that the same thing happened to her. But MawMaw said that she called on the promises of God and the struggle in her mind left. And she felt immensely relieved.

I can’t describe the struggle I felt. I do know that it just felt like I didn’t have peace in my mind at all. I knew I was saved. I knew Jesus loved me. So I called on as many verses that I could to get the peace I needed. And yes, it came.

I haven’t had that particular kind of struggle in my mind. It seems as if the Lord defeated my flesh in that battle.

The above verse reminds me that God is always for us…………if we are not at peace, he wants to give us that peace because he IS our peace and he IS always for us.

How does this relate to your marriage? You may be in a spiritual battle in your marriage. Just know that God is for your marriage and he will never be against it. He designed marriage itself. Just know that the battles in your marriage are the Lord’s. Turn over your cares to Him and stand on the promises of his Word because he is for you.

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly Activities

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly

This is too cute of a story not to pass along some activities for those little preschool hands.

Most teachers like to start off with an activity that engages the reader before the actual reading of the story called hook activities.

Hook Activities

Allow the children to view a Youtube version of the There Was An Old Lady…… where kids are taught to sing along with this book. Click here for that link.

Sequencing Activity

After reading the story, children can cut out and color animals in the story. Follow the directions for the cereal box activity where the children create an old woman out of a cereal box. Then the child can retell the story and place the animals in sequence into the old lady’s mouth as she eats them.

Spelling

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly ~ fun learning activity. Fine motor, sequencing, early reading and spelling all rolled into one!Photo Credit:housing a forest.com

Use an empty Mrs. Butterworth’s bottle, pipe cleaners, and beads with letters and you have a fun spelling game here.

Scissors Cutting Activity

For kindergarten, children need to gain more practice cutting with scissors. Here is a cutting and coloring activity, your children will love.

Rhyming Word Activity

Rhyming words is also a kindergarten skill. This rhyming activity will help children rhyme words with fly- dry, sky, spy, my, and cry by moving the strip of words across the woman’s mouth.

Math Activities

Counting and identifying numbers with this math activity. You also learn a cute song with rhyming words as you count with your fingers.

Using cut outs or story props, have children place the animals in size order from largest to smallest or from smallest to largest.

Estimate the weight of each animal the old woman ate.

Writing Activities

Write another ending to the book. Find the writing activity at Scholastic.com here.

How We Avoided Purchasing Dressers for the Bedrooms

When we first decided to foster young children, I wanted to find little cute dressers for the children’s rooms. I longed to dress up the children’s rooms with a girl dresser and/or a boy dresser. In my own bedroom, I wanted an updated dresser in addition to the old antique one I had.

So when the children did come, I had yet to purchase dressers for their room. But then I discovered something. The closets already had nice clothing racks put there by the previous owners. I then placed all of their socks and undergarments and shorts on the top of the rack and the rest of the clothing items were hung on the bottom part of the rack.IMG_20151029_064347229

My second reason for not purchasing the dressers……….

the children have more open space in their rooms to invite a friend to play with them in their room. Granted each room does have an armchair so that I can sit and read them bible stories at the end of the day. These armchairs were purchased twelve years before considering fostering.

So each bedroom has a bookcase for their books, their bed, and an armchair. For us, that is all the children really need. More space to play with a friend seemed more ideal than filling it up with more furniture.

My third reason for not purchasing the dressers………..

IMG_20151029_070128493

in my own bedroom, I purged my dresser and found about two sacks of clothing that my husband and I didn’t wear mostly because the items were not visible. Now I use my old antique only to put shorts and undergarments in it.

Everything else is put up in my clothing racks in my closet so I can “see” every item I own.

So now, we decided to not purchase the dressers because we are pretty much content with the clothing racks and extra floor space for the kids to play.

Are we just like Mephibosheth broken? The Husband Journal Entry 27

Water lilies

And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table; he was lame in both feet.
Just a little bit of background on Mephibosheth, he was the grandson of Saul and the son of Jonathan. King David was seeking any one left from the family of Saul to show kindness to. Mephibosheth became lame in both feet at an early age.
Mephibosheth felt unworthy to sit at the king’s table because of his lame feet. He asked King David why should you recognize a dead dog like me? But David gave him a place at the king’s table regardless of his disability.
I feel like that some days. I am afraid to come before the King and eat at his table. Why does God recognize a failure like me? While I try my best to do things according to scriptures, I fumble in my efforts. Just yesterday, I was reminded of how I worded something to another fellow christian that wasn’t very nice, and it makes me think goodness why would God allow me to sit at his table? While I asked for forgiveness from this fellow christian, I am reminded that not only does God want us to sit at his table, but others with failures, hurts, and disappointments want us to sit right along with them. Thank goodness my fellow christian forgave me.
Friends we are all in the same boat. We come with failures and brokenness. But it is God who makes us worthy to eat at the King’s table. We can come boldly to the throne of grace and ask whatever we need. Not only that, but our friends of the faith want you to sit there amongst them too……….in all of our brokenness and hurts and failures. Because King David’s table wasn’t just for King David and Mephibosheth, it was for all of the royal family and that friend (if you have accepted Jesus in your heart) includes you!!
